I hope it isn't all potato soup or something. That shit's so bland.

You don't like potato soup?

[BLASPHEMY. Potato and leek soup is delicious!]

It's not my first choice.

[He starts heading downstairs, surprised his stomach hasn't already started growling at the thought of food.]

You'll have to remind me to make you some potato and leek soup once I find a good recipe for it.

[Unfortunately, his first thought is that he should ask Sanji for one; it's such a natural thing that he isn't even aware of it until he's already had the thought, and by then the realization that Sanji is no longer here has already set in, and his chest constricts painfully once again.]

Blech.

...I guess I can stomach it if you're making it, though.

[To the kitchen! And straight for the cabinet. Let's see what we can dig out here...]

Is that how you show your appreciation for my cooking?

By saying that yours would probably be better than the potato soup I've had in the past?

He digs around in the cabinet a bit, finally emerging with an "Aha!" and a couple cans of vegetable soup.]

This is like that heavy American shit, but it's pretty good.

[Richard leans over his shoulder to peer at the labels, but it's honestly all Greek to him. Food doesn't have ingredient lists or anything like that in his world.]

I'll take your word for that.

[Then, padding over to the table to take a seat, he pauses.]

Is American food really all that different from your own?

Countries all over the world, the world I came from at least, all have different styles of food. Before we could all connect with each other as easily, the sort of meals people could put together were all based on what sorts of things actually grew and lived in their area.

[He gets the cans open, looking for suitable bowls.]

So yeah. They're pretty different.

I'll have to look into finding an American cookbook at some point to see these differences for myself. But no guarantees that I'll be any good at cooking any of the recipes in it. My one attempt at French cooking was barely a step above disaster level.

[He takes a seat at the table; then, realizing he should be helpful, he goes to get the spoons and set them down on the table for whenever the soup is ready.]

To be fair, a lot of typical American food really came from somewhere else originally. It's kind of a mixed pot that way.

[He fills two bowls with soup and sticks one in the microwave. Classy.]

I wanted to take a trip there someday, but the opportunity never came up.

[... oh. Of course. Being a king may give Richard the ability to grant many wishes to his friends, but that isn't one of them.]

... if you could visit any kind of place in the world that you wanted, where would you go?

Any place? Geez, I dunno.

...Maybe Paris.

What about a city with fountains and canals everywhere, a veritable jewel box amidst the scorching desert sands?

[Isamu blinks, confused, as he takes one bowl of soup out of the microwave and sticks in the second.]

Yu Liberte, the capital city of Strahta, blessed by the water eleth from Strahta's valkines. No matter how many times I visit it, it never ceases to be just as stunning. It truly is a remarkable city.

That sounds like a bunch of nonsense, but I'll take your word for it, seeing as you've been there and I haven't. I'm sure it's wonderful.

[His face falls slightly, though he tries not to let it show.]

I'll take you there someday when we return to Ephinea.

...Yeah. I'd probably like that.

[If that day ever comes.

Oh look, soup is done. Isamu grabs a bowl in each hand and brings them over to the table.]

I'm sure you will.

[When the soup is set in front of him, he picks up his spoon and then just sort of... stares down at it, trying to work up the will to eat.]

[Isamu has no such hang-ups, and he digs into his bowl almost immediately.]

Mmm-mm. I'm eating it, Richard. You've gotta go through with your end of the deal.

[Richard glances up at him, then scoops up a spoonful of soup. He blows on it for a moment to cool it down; once he's satisfied that he won't burn his mouth, he eats it.

See? He's trying! Slowly, but he is trying.]

[Isamu's going to keep watching Richard too, just to make sure he keeps at it.

He'll finish his own bowl completely, scraping the last bits of it from the bottom of the bowl with his spoon.]
