I know you're upset.

[Dammit, Richard. Isamu is supposed to be the difficult one.]

But this isn't going to help anything.

And you aren't?

[It's harsher than he meant it to come out, but the sentiment still stands.]

Why are you trying to pretend this isn't hurting you too? You aren't fooling anyone, especially not me.

What do you want me to say?

[His voice gets a few degrees colder.]

Do you want me to break down too?

I want to see that you feel something over this.

[Because he doesn't want to be the only one hurting, as selfish as it may be.]

Of course I feel something.

[The words come out in a hiss now.]

Sanji was my friend too. I don't work for free for just any idiot.

But someone has to keep a cool head about it. Sanji would keep a cool head about it.

Do I look like Sanji to you?

[Richard's tone is equally cold. This is hitting a sore spot for him; in his mind, it comes uncomfortably close to people telling him that he needs to be more like someone else.]

No. And I wouldn't expect you to be. That's not what I'm saying.

I want you to be able to get upset.

[Richard just shakes his head, a sad little smile playing at the corners of his lips.]

And I want the same thing for you. I'm grateful for what you do, but you shouldn't feel like you always have to be strong for me, Isamu. Let me be a shoulder for you sometimes, too.

I'm not strong, though! I told you about what I did.

This is all I can do now.

And I told you about what I did. I don't think either one of us has the right to judge the other for their actions.

[He stands, moving over to Isamu's chair to just wrap his arms around his friend's shoulders.]

I may not be able to call myself much of a friend, but this is something I can do too.

Of course you can call yourself a friend. Don't say such self-deprecating bullshit.

[This is muttered, and Isamu leans into his friend's touch anyway.]

Isn't that a bit hypocritical?

[See, Isamu? Two can play at that game.]

Hmph.

That's another thing I'm good at.

I can't exactly scold you for it without being an even bigger hypocrite.

Then we can carry that title together, I suppose.

[He grips the blond's hand rather suddenly.]

You aren't allowed to leave without me. Understand?

[Surprised, Richard blinks for a moment before giving Isamu's hand a tight squeeze back.]

I thought I already made that promise to you a long time ago. I'm not going anywhere without you.

I know.

[And that promise may yet mean nothing at all, given this place.]

But it helps to hear you say it.

Even if we are separated, I'll come find you-- you have my word.

[And he moves one hand, sliding it down to hover over Isamu's chest where the ring Richard gave him hangs on its chain beneath his shirt.]

Good.

...Good.

[Then he hangs his head and sits silently for a time.]

[Richard gives him a squeeze, not moving from where he's standing.]

Go ahead and cry if you want to. I won't say anything.

I'm not gonna cry!

That damn cook's an idiot, and I...

[But he chokes on the words anyway, biting his lip.]

[There we go. Come on, Isamu; he had his turn earlier, now it's your turn to cry.

Rather than say anything, Richard just shifts one hand up to stroke Isamu's hair gently, soothingly. Go ahead, let it all out.]

[The sobs are silent, his shoulders shaking every so often, the silence broken only every so often in order for him to take a harsh breath.

It takes a while for the tears to trickle slowly down his face.]

[And Richard will just remain, arms around him, one hand still stroking his hair as he tries in vain to fight back his own tears.

They've both lost something irreplaceable today, something that no amount of crying is going to heal.]
