I refuse to believe that anyone with a speaking voice as pleasant as yours could be that terrible a singer.

[Dammit, Richard. You're just trying to make him blush on purpose now.

Well it works, if just for a moment.]

Flattery will get you nowhere, I'm afraid.

[Of course he is; Isamu is adorable when he blushes, so why on earth WOULDN'T he want to make that happen?]

Not even if I offer to sing first in exchange?

No. There will be no singing. This is a sing free zone. I'm putting up a sign as soon as I can be assed to make one.

[TOO LATE. Richard is already taking matters into his own hands and clearing his throat. He knows next to nothing about this particular song aside from the fact that they have it on one of those shiny music discs at the rec center and that machine that shows the words on the screen while it plays, but it's catchy as hell and it's not that hard for him to remember the lyrics without even trying.

SINGING NOW.]

[Isamu stares at Richard as he sings, mouth slightly agape. By the end of it he's pinching the bridge of his nose and the king should feel lucky he hasn't reached over to strangle him.]

...Why must you do this to me?

[That was an American boy band. He knows that was an American boy band.]

I told you I wasn't going to sing even if you did, anyway! My morning. Not singing.

...And anyway, that was rude. It sounds like you're trying to kick me out.

[Hey, give Richard a little credit, his voice really isn't all that bad. It's passable, at the very least, enough so that he would probably make a decent addition to an actual boy band. And hey, he's got the looks to be able to pull it off, too.]

Would you rather I sang you a love song instead? There were a number of those on the disc as well.

[RUN, ISAMU. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE. You have unleashed a monster.]

That... is not at all manly.

[Never mind that the boys who sang those songs had girls throwing themselves at them.

...It also doesn't help that he cracks a smile when he says this.]

[And suddenly, as if a button has been pushed, Richard stops singing, looking rather dismayed.

Oh.]

It isn't?

[Of course it wouldn't be. "Manly" would be something like one of those loud songs with lots of drums and guitar, wouldn't it?]

[Isamu snorts.]

Dammit, Richard. I was just messing with you.

Girls love guys that can sing.

And yet I don't see you jumping at the opportunity to demonstrate your singing ability for me.

Because I told you - I don't fit into that "guys who can sing" category.

I refuse to believe that until I hear proof for myself.

Too bad, 'cause it's not happening.

Not even if I ask nicely?

Haven't you already? And I said no.

[The king just looks at Isamu for a moment, as if deciding what to say next... and then he can't help it.

He starts to laugh, because this whole conversation has taken a turn for the ridiculous, even he can admit this much.

It's also mostly his fault and he doesn't care.]

[That gets Isamu grinning, because any time he can get genuine mirth out of Richard it feels like a win.]

[It certainly has been a while since Richard last laughed and meant it. He can't deny that it feels good to relax and just let himself go like this, especially with everything that's been going on lately. It's nice.

After a few moments more of laughing, he quiets down and just leans forward to bump his forehead against Isamu's, crusade of manliness apparently forgotten for the moment.]

Thank you. I really don't know what I would do without you.

[Isamu pats the top of the blond's head, easily allowing the affection.]

The feeling is mutual, you know.

[And Richard's eyes go wide for a brief moment, breath catching in his throat. Those are words he's wanted to hear his entire life-- that he's important, that he's needed, not as the prince or the king but just as HIMSELF. The fact that they're coming from Isamu of all people just makes them that much more powerful, because he knows how much Isamu hates admitting that he needs anyone other than himself.

He can't help it: trying to be masculine be damned, he's going to tug Isamu into a tight hug, touched by that admission.]

Heh... Don't act like it's a surprise or anything. I've said embarrassing things like this before.

[Richard definitely misses them, if his reluctance to let go is any indication.]

No, it isn't that. It's just... I've wanted to hear someone say that to me for my entire life. I wanted to know that I mattered to someone because of who I was, not what I was.

Geez, man... of course you do.

And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. You had other friends before me and there's no way I believe it isn't the same for them.

[He shakes his head.] You never give yourself enough credit.

I'm sure you're right. You always are about this kind of thing.

[He smiles a little against Isamu's hair.]

But you are the first person who has ever put it into words.

[Oh, sure, people have called him a friend and told him he was important, but no one has ever said they NEEDED him before. It's really a sort of wonderful feeling.]
